Today I’m going to tell you about another way to fix a cabochon. And that’s not all! I will also tell you how to make complex jewelry from wire and stone using soldering. We are going to make jewelry on a frame that we will solder ourselves. We will use a gas torch and solder.
To create a pendant, we will use coils of copper wire. Coils of wire can be made by hand from 1 mm and 0.4 mm thick wire. You can use any stone cabochons without a hole.
On the frame, it is convenient to fasten the individual elements made of wire. The frame is rigid, and therefore the entire ornament will be durable, nothing will dangle and all the elements will be securely attached. Cabochon without a hole will be fixed with the help of the details of the ornament in the process of assembling.
Many craftsmen use only this technique and make their jewelry using a frame. By the way – looking at the photos, you will notice that the jewelry is assembled on the frame and you might be surprised by its complexity but don’t worry. On the back side, you can easily cover the frame with a nice weaving.
I am not a professional jeweler. My soldering skills are not the best in the world. Sometimes I have to use soldering skills in my craft. And I recommend that you learn the basic techniques of soldering with a gas torch at home. It is often mentioned in Wire wrapped jewelry tutorials free for beginners.
A small gas torch, sold in hardware stores, will be enough for novice craftsmen. I personally use it all the time, along with other professional burners. This torch is good for heating and soldering large parts.
The best way to clean copper before soldering is to use citric acid. Dilute regular citric acid in warm water and put the copper workpieces in it.
Copper can also be soldered with silver solder in places where you can’t see the solder joint. There are also special copper-silver pastes for soldering.
Where to solder?

It all depends on the number of additional elements that you will be attaching to the frame. First solder the main circle of the frame, then solder the joints inside. You can solder several joints at once. Be careful not to “burn” the wire itself. The solder should flow evenly over the wire filling the joint.
After annealing, the copper becomes soft. To stiffen the copper, flatten the entire frame with a hammer on an anvil. You can use the file to sand and grind the frame.
Next, follow the plan (if there is one, of course). Slip the wire into the coil in advance. Attach the coil to the frame.
Let’s decorate the whole pendant with weavings.

Attach the cabochon to the frame with a 1 mm wire. Fix the cabochon in the right place. What an unexpected way to fix a cabochon! Right!?
